La Duke Essay
For years people have been trying to help and strengthen our environment that we all live in.   Unfortunately, our attempts have not been successful; it has actually been a total failure. In Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, Gore talks about how we are ruining our environment and that these habits are not sustainable for much longer. Winona LaDuke, an environmentalist, activist and writer parallels Gore’s thoughts and beliefs in her speech, “Voices from White Earth.”
LaDuke identifies herself with a group that calls themselves, “Anishinabeg” (435). They are considered as indigenous people. The term indigenous describes their people as, “Any ethnic group who inhabit the geographic region with which they have the earliest historical connection” (Wikipedia.com). Throughout LaDuke’s speech she argues for many different things. She argues for her land and believes it was stripped away from her and also argues that we, meaning the rest of the world, live an industrial life that is not sustainable. To support her argument, LaDuke uses many different strategies. She gives lots of facts and logos about the situation, she is well known and very creditable, and also hits the audience with a very strong pathos technique.  
There are a lot of claims that LaDuke makes in her speech. But the one that stands above them all is that “Indigenous peoples have lived on earth sustainably for thousands of years, and I suggest to you that indigenous ways of living are the only sustainable ways of living” (437). She believes this because indigenous people live in accordance with “Natural Law.” Natural Law is defined as “The theory that posits the existence of a law whose content is set by nature and that therefore has validity everywhere” (Wikipedia.com). LaDuke strongly believes that what we do now will have our society extinct in a couple hundred years.
