A 6-year-old Sumter County girl mauled Monday by a pack of dogs was recovering Wednesday at a Columbia hospital, and a relative has been charged in connection with the incident, authorities said.

Kenyea Smith of Dalzell, was listed Wednesday in serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Palmetto Health Richland, Sumter County Sheriff’s Maj. Hampton Gardner said.

The girl suffered “extreme” bite injuries to her face and head, as well as bites and scratches over the rest of her body, Gardner said.

Still, despite the seriousness of her injuries, she is expected to make a full recovery, he said.

Five of the six dogs that attacked Kenyea were located, and two of them had to be shot because they were acting “aggressively” toward deputies, Gardner said.

The other surviving dogs were turned over to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control for rabies testing, he said.

Meanwhile, Geraldine Knox has been charged with one count of allowing vicious animals to run at large, Gardner said. Knox is a relative of Kenyea, though he didn’t know the exact relationship or other personal details about Knox.

If convicted, Knox faces a maximum of 30 days in jail or a $200 fine, Gardner said.

Although Knox didn’t specifically say she owned the dogs that attacked Kenyea, she told investigators she “fed the dogs,” Gardner said, adding, “She was caring for them.”
