College Essay

I remember how scared I was. How lonely I felt. How numb I had to be.

That day I decided to do something that would change my life and all the people I loved along with it. That night I called my ex-boyfriend who said he couldn"t talk to me because I was being to cryptic. That"s when I started to take the Tylenol. First in pairs then in groups of four then groups of five. Thirty- six pills later I was being rushed to the hospital by my strong willed father trying not to cry and my frantic mother praying that she wouldn"t lose another.

The tunnel vision took over and I only saw people from the neck down. I didn"t want to look up at anyone"s face. I was ashamed. They then hooked up to an EKG machine and stabbed me with IV"s. Hours later I was questioned by some lady who would decide my fate. I ended up in the psychiatric ward of the hospital.

The tunnel vision didn"t leave me for the nest seven days. Then I was sent back into the "Real World". I knew then that nothing would be the same. That everything was different but looked and seemed exactly the same as before. Everything still seemed as out of grasp as it did before. And I wondered what was the point of doing something so stupid.

It wasn"t until a month later that I realized that I had changed. That I was changing. That somehow hitting rock bottom was exactly what I needed. Now I"m not saying that what I did is the smartest way of achieving that, but that overdose somehow set things in motion. It taught me the most valuable lesson that I"ve always known.

That no matter how bad things get they will always get better.

While diving in the car with my sister I told her my revelation. I told her that everything was going right for a change. I was accepted into the Young Artists Residency Program at the Art Institute of Boston. My grandparents chipped in so my parents could pay for me to go.
