The Interview

My interview was scheduled for 5pm, but being the unorganized person that I am, I didn"t get specific direction and I had gotten myself lost.   Entering the building at 5:15 for my interview, my nostrils filled with a fresh smell of cleaning products.   The waiting room was filled with empty chairs, a fish tank with brightly colored fish, and enough magazines for a bus full of people.   The windows looked as if they were just cleaned.   The carpets were freshly vacuumed and the temperature was cool.   At first sight, I was impressed.

I was interviewing for a secretarial position, but as the manager described to me the Medical Assistant (MA) position, I became more interested in what that position might entail.   I scheduled a day to shadow the MA the following week.

I arrived on time that next week, 7:45am, and was greeted by a friendly younger woman at the door.   As I followed her that day, I was able to see exactly what an MA is responsible for.   As the manager described it, it was a clinical position.   Bust, as the day progressed I realized that it was much more than that.   The position required compassion, understanding and caring.   It required lots of energy for the two year old ‘rug rats" that would come in for their check ups and patience for the not-so-happy, short tempered patients.   Clinically, I would need to have a strong stomach for the lesion removals, ear wax impactions, stitches and staple removing, blood drawing, and other things that might turn your stomach in different directions.

When I was offered the position, of course I accepted.   Little did I know what this job would lead to.   As an MA, I work with nurses all day long and have now begun to see the traits a nurse must have.   I admire the knowledge and compassion that our nurses use every day to care for patients.   By working alongside nurses, I am...
